Taking a bicycle when overland touring adds another level of adventure, allowing you to explore new towns or have cross country mountain bike trail rides.
Carrying a bike or two can however be cumbersome and the TVAN rear hatch design makes some of the normal tow bar mounting solutions unworkable. There is also the matter of finding a rack suitable for the off road destinations we normally head for.
After some research and their great reviews we chose the extreme duty ISI Bicycle Carriers Extreme Duty system. This modular system can be adapted, meccano style, to suit almost any application, and the beauty of it is that the same bike carrier arm can be used on both TVAN and the Landcruiser.
The TREK Rail electric mountain bike weighs a hefty 24kg, which combines with the 25kg ISI bike carrier to add 50kg to the trailer or Cruiser when its all fitted. This weight is multiplied when it transfers to the Cruiser’s rear axle to something like 75kg so keep this in mind if you are running close to your maximum vehicle GVM.
Here’s a video where I show you how to install the ISI bike carrier on a TVAN but the same principles will apply to any camper trailer or caravan.
