A convoy of vehicles led by the legendary Ron Moon ran part way up the Gary Highway (Everard Junction to Windy Corner) in late July 2022 – we took two days to traverse the often rutted, overgrown and narrow track.
We touched on the Gary Highway again a few weeks later, passing through Gary Junction when travelling sole and homebound from WA to the NT across the Gary Junction Road.

David Carnegie Road
In July ’22 a group of us traversed the David Carnegie Road, a roughly formed track running south-north between Tjukayirla Roadhouse on the GCR through to the Gunbarrel Highway at Mangkili Claypan.
The ~250km long road is a great outback drive that approximately follows part of the route taken by explorer and gold prospector David Carnegie during his 1896 expedition from Coolgardie to Hall’s Creek.
Back to the desert
For some time I’ve toyed with the idea of traversing some of the roads constructed in the 1950s and 60s to service the British atomic testing program – when half way across the Simpson Desert on our recent trip we decided to make the trip a reality and started making plans to journey coast to coast through the very heart of Australia’s most remote deserts on the Len Beadell road network.
Getting a High Country high!

Knowing that the area was so vast we elected to get a local to show us around, and few locals are better qualified to guide you through the high country than Ron and Trent Moon, so we joined a TVAN only Moon Tours tag along trip for a week that cherry picked the best of this superb area.
Following Molly’s Road to Old Andado
We farewelled the rocky escarpments of the East MacDonnell Ranges as the Binns Track took us southward toward the Santa Teresa indigenous community.
From Santa Teresa the gravel road became the Old Andado Track, reputedly constructed on request of Molly Clark the owner of the historic station at southern end of the route, and our destination today
Rained in and shut out – Kulgera NT
The morning haul to Kulgera was an easy 180km drive that took us just across the South Australia – Northern Territory border. Where we were bound for after that remained a mystery, in hands of the weather gods and Moon Tours…
Weird, wacky and wonderful – Australiana at its best – The Oodnadatta Track
For now all roads to the north were open but we knew the forecast low pressure system would change that very quickly, so rather than breaking our trip we again decided forego any overnight stops along the track and run straight through to Oodnadatta to reassess our plans.
